Green Mantra

I have just come back after a refreshing trip to Matheran. Cannot ask for a “greener” start to the year than staying in a little town that allows no vehicles at all, not even a bicycle! That monkey in the picture, sat on the roof of our hotel for a good hour studying us closely with an expression that almost seemed to say "Humph! Humans!" and then as if to drown his sorrows he downed half a bottle of Pepsi left behind by a careless guest!!

Don't even get me started on plastic waste thrown around by tourists! I don't want to start the year complaining!

“When you pray, Move your feet” says the old African proverb, and time for action it is!

First up, please put on your creative hats and give me catchy green slogans that can go on T-shirts and Bags. (Thank you all for so wonderfully sharing your Green and Not-green lists, its so inspiring to know the little efforts all of us are making)

My personal goal is to ensure that my neighborhood is plastic bag free. I intend to work closely with local associations, shopkeepers and residents to ensure the message gets across. Please do give me advice/ideas on how I could proceed and if any measures taken in your locality have succeeded. In fact it would be great if we each adopt this task for our own neighborhood and compare notes on progress.

Legislation obviously does not work. Education hopefully will. Why not reward shopkeepers who do not keep plastic bags at the store? Why not celebrate stores that give out only cloth bags, even if customers have to pay a little extra for it? To start with, I intend to get every shop in my neighborhood to at least put up a poster showing the ill effects of plastic bags. (All my friends in the creative and design fields: HELP!!)

Right now, I am doing something I never thought I would do: designing grocery bags (with go green slogans) that are useful and smart to carry around! Wish me luck!!

  1. Education IS the only thing that works!! :)

As for slogans, ANYthing that makes sense grammatically (or maybe not!!) but can send across a clear message, ALWAYS works...

I kept telling my friends not to litter for over 3 years and finally a few choose to put that chocolate wrapper back in their pockets!! :D

And again, take all the smart people in the world and try to squeeze out what's common among all of them... chances are... that they're all affected by the magic of Bill Watterson - C&H!! Way to go... :) (and that's even first on your list... even better!!) Actually you can try something from the series where Calvin is worried about the trees that are cut off (ch080501.gif and ch080503.gif)

If you can keep this work going... I'll redirect my traffic here for a while... for the CAUSE... good going.. :)

Until later, see you when I see you... :)

    P.S. Dolphin prescribed this...

  2. Hey, thanks a milion! yes, calvin just might have the right thing to say! this is going to be exciting for sure and I could use all the help I can get. Just a smaple of some of the quotes I have already received:

Green is the WORLD'S favorite color.

    We breathe because they breathe

    Everyday is EARTH day

and this clincher from one of my more outspoken facebook pal:

"Take your head out of Uranus, Do your bit for Earth"

well :) dont know about the grammar, but this cracked me up alright!

  3. Okay, I am running short on time. But off the top of my head I have three slogans:

    A) 2020 A.D:
The colour green, nowhere to be seen?
    B) I looked high, I looked low.
Where did all the greenery go?
    C) Trees are green, as is kryptonite.
    Do the right thing.

  4. Three more:

    1) Stash the Trash
    2) What are all the green bills in the world worth if they are the only things green left?
3)Global warming is causing excessive melting of glaciers. As the snow falls, my Earth weeps.

    bye-bye plastic!

  8. Okey ... To start with, I want you to reconsider this one :
'There are Cool people. There are Hot people. And then ....
    There are GREEN people.'

because beyond just being a color , green is now emerging (or if not,we hve to make it emrge) as a lifestyle in itself.
A style statement which every personal (irrespective of the age) wants to flaunt with.
Because it obviously reflects the sensible you.

  9. See if they are to your liking.

    => "Modern technology
    Owes ecology
    An apology."
    ~Alan M. Eddison

=> Nature provides a free lunch, but only if we control our appetites.

=> Because we don't think about future generations, they will never forget us.

=> We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

=> There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.

=> Till now man has been up against Nature; from now on he will be up against his own nature.

  10. This could work :-
It surely made sense to me the time i read it.

=> XYZ, you haven't finished your milk. We can't put it back in the cow, you know.

  12. nice work, everyone! and thanks a bunch. I think we'll have a tough time deciding which slogans to go with. part of being eco friendly is not to encourage the impulsive shopping habit, so I dont want to sell/give away anything that will simply lie as junk in someones cupboard. so tell me, do you think people will buy and later use the the round neck Tshirts with slogans?

  13. Putting some nice looking graphics along will add some flavour to it and make them everGREEN.

  14. hmm, i doubt if people buy our t-shirts but i believe students will buy them for sure! organizing GREEN WALKS will inspire people buy them (hopefully). wrist bands would work as well. we should concentrate on small and effective means such as banners, bands, caps, bags and try t-shirts a little later.
